One of the reasons why is that fostering is not only hard work, it is also heart work.

Recently, my wife and I took in additional foster children into our home, bumping the number of children in our house to nine. I realize that your initial thought is, “Nine children? I thought there was some sort of rule saying you couldn’t have that many children.” Let me assure you that this was a special occasion as it was an emergency, and the children needed to be placed immediately. The child welfare worker in charge of the children had called several…

“What you will do a as a foster parent will truly be making a tremendous difference in the lives of children in need.”

Can I share something with you? Being a parent has been the second best thing I have ever done. The first, of course, was marrying my wife! To be sure, being a parent has made me a much better person, in so many ways.

Yet, the road to being a parent for me took a sad path in the beginning. My first child died of a disease known as Anencephaly, a condition where the brain, scalp, and skull never truly form.

When my wife gave birth to our child, she was in labor for 92 hours before our first daughter…

Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15- to 24-year-olds in the United States.

The attempts by teens to commit suicide during the Covid Lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 has risen dramatically, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Girls between the ages of 12 to 17 were found to have tried to attempt suicide increased by roughly 51% in early 2021 than the same time frame in 2019, pre-Covid. In addition, boys in the same age group had a 4% increase of suicide attempts, as well.

The CDC study indicated that the rise of suicide attempt in teens might be attributed to a “lack of connectedness to…

When the Supreme Court ruled 9–0 in June of 2021 in the Fulton v. Philadelphia decision, allowing religious foster care agencies to operate while still observing their religious beliefs, the landmark ruling helps not only foster parents, but the system as a whole. Despite what some may say, faith based agencies can play an important role with today’s foster care system.

Byron Johnson, the director of the Institute for Studies of Religion, has heard those concerns. Johnson stated “Scientifically, there is no research that suggests sexual minority foster youths have worse outcomes when raised in traditional religious homes. (And the…

A few years ago, I asked a group of foster parents at a conference why they became foster parents. The answers I received did not surprise me, as so many of them echoed my own reason. The majority I spoke to on that afternoon told me that they felt called by God to look after His children. For them, and like so many others, foster parenting was simply answering God’s call, and to live a life of faith that demonstrated God’s love for all.

God calls His people to display their faith in Him on a daily basis, and in…

“Children being displaced often struggle to best deal with and survive these traumatic events.”

The number of migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021 is on pace to be the highest in 20 years, this according to a top advisor to United States President Joe Biden. This large increase in migrants at the border includes an increase in those children who are unaccompanied.

Indeed, in the state of California, some foster parents have been asked if they are able to have up to a staggering “ 26 or more unaccompanied migrant children per household.”

Between 20 million and 40 million people world wide are victims of human trafficking a modern form of slavery that involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain labor or sex.

As Covid continues to grip the nation, and world, human trafficking and child predators are changing their methods in order to lure more victims. The Coronavirus, or Covid 19, is not only resulting in an increase in child abuse and neglect, there are also fears that the pandemic will also result in a future increase in child pornography and child sex trafficking.

“We are seeing a big…

“As Covid continues to place challenge upon challenge to the foster care system, the system needs to be improved”

The Coronavirus continues to upend foster care and child welfare, leaving foster care agencies and foster parents across the nation trying to find not only answers, but resources and support.

Agencies recognize the difficulties that foster families are facing, and are working hard in finding solutions to help both the foster families and the children placed in the homes. Yet, the challenges persist. Indeed, many foster parents remain concerned, and confused, looking for answers and receiving little guidance. As Covid continues to place challenge upon challenge to the foster care system, the system needs to be improved, for all involved…

My favorite time of the year is upon us. Christmas, and the holiday season. Our family just put up our Christmas tree; our biggest yet. A 13 foot tree, filled with lights and home made ornaments. Like every year, the children in our home put up most of the ornaments and lights, while my wife and I helped the little ones. It was a magical day to start off a joyous time of year. There was much laughter, music, and excitement. Yet, for two little girls in our home, it was a time of confusion, and even some anxiety. …

“My home is one that has been filled with more love than I could ever have imagined.”

It seems that as I grow older, I become more and more appreciative and more grateful for all the blessings in my life. I imagine that is simply a progression of age, and simply shows that I am getting older.

Indeed, as I do grow older, I have begun to appreciate my fifteen years plus of being a parent to children from so many different backgrounds; children in foster care. With that in mind, I wanted to share with you why I am grateful, in no particular order mind you, for being a foster parent.

1) I am thankful for…
